3 Mindful Habits That Help to Overcome Bad Moods

Being in a bad mood can throw a wet blanket on anyone’s day. It drains energy, and makes it difficult to gain positive emotional momentum. But the thing about bad moods is that they’re a product of the human mind. That means they can be fought against and overruled by simple changes in attitude and behavior. Leadership Coach Derrick Carpenter advises that “When you catch yourself feeling moody, a helpful initial step is to take a moment to reflect on what’s causing you to feel what you’re feeling. Our emotions are often an outward sign of what’s going on for us internally, and sometimes, the internal stuff justifies the bad mood.” Here are few easy tips on how to turn bad moods around:

A.    Observe and Justify Your Emotional State:

The majority of people go through life never giving a second thought to their state of mind.  This is a bad thing.  This is unhealthy because mindset has a direct impact on behavior and decision-making.  Every time you feel negative, pause to explore what caused your bad mood in the first place, and why.  Address the root cause so that you don’t fall into a cycle of dysfunction.

B.    Surround Yourself with Positivity:

Human beings might have free will, but that doesn’t change the fact that we are all impressionable creatures.  Emotions are contagious, and they are transmitted by the phenomena we’re exposed to.  If you consume negative and discouraging information all the time, you will end up feeling bad.  This is why it’s healthy to surround yourself with positivity.  Read positive literature, listen to positive music and watch positive media.

C.    Respect and Acknowledge What is Out of Your Control:

Bad moods are often caused by helplessness and frustration.  There could be undesirable circumstances in your life which you are powerless to change.  If this is true, be careful not to become fixated on changing the uncontrollable.  Adapt to uncertainty, instead of wrestling with it.  Pick your battles so that you can avoid biting off more than you can chew.

When it comes to seizing control over bad moods, prevention is often far better than cure. Instead of waiting till bad moods happen in order to counteract them, lead a mindful lifestyle. Mindfulness might not make it impossible to experience bad moods, but it does make it more difficult for bad moods to develop and take root. As a matter of daily routine, filter every thought that crosses your mind. Allow positive thoughts to flourish, and prevent negative thoughts from running rampant.
