3 Devastating Traps to Beware of When Using Social Media

Social media is arguably the most popular cultural trend of the 21st century.  Everyone uses it, and everyone loves it.  There’s just one issue.  Social media isn’t exactly free of controversies.  More and more people are going through headaches and problems specifically because of bad experiences with social media. Writer Yousra Zaki suggests that “Social media was created to be a positive outlet. A platform for people to express themselves. It has now become an avenue of negativity… Although most of us know this, we decide that we don’t want to give up on social media after all. We don’t want to be gripped by FOMO, or the ‘Fear of missing out.’” Here are a few key drawbacks that come with using social media:

     I.        Psychological Dependence:

Social media platforms aren’t just generic websites.  They’re applications which are purposely designed to capture people’s attention.  Both by distributing curated information, and by constructing interfaces which trigger habit-formation.  Set clear boundaries on how often you use social media, and why.  It’s not an exaggeration when people say that social media is addictive.

    II.        Feelings of Inadequacy:

Every single person on social media goes the extra mile to portray themselves in a picture-perfect light.  This can end up causing negative feelings like envy, inadequacy and hopelessness in observers.  If visiting social media constantly makes you feel bad about yourself, that’s a sign that it’s having a destructive impact on your self-worth.  Don’t allow social media to trigger depression in your life.

  III.        Cyberbullying:

Not everyone on social media is kind and caring.  It’s actually reasonable to say that the majority of people online are capable of malice.  The Internet is teeming with mean-spirited commenters and trolls.  So be careful not to get swept up in hurtful discourse.  Whether or not negative comments are directed to you, or to someone else, always interact respectfully on social media. Stay away from angry mobs and use your presence there to spread love.

Conclusion:

If you’re going to be active on social media, it’s important to recognize that each platform has its own challenges.  There are some aspects of social media which are enjoyable, and there are some aspects of social media which are downright dangerous.  Instead of naively expecting social media to provide a neutral experience for you, be conscious and discerning about the way you use social media.  Avoid the toxic side of it, and focus your energy on using it constructively.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
