3 Simple Truths to Live By if You’re a Beginner at Something
Life is a journey. And the fact of the matter is, at numerous points along the way, the you’re going to be a beginner at something. You’re going to be a novice. Regardless of what the situation is, being a beginner is nerve wracking. It makes people feel anxious, and gets in a way of our ability to execute. So what’s the solution to all this tension? What’s the best way to shake off the jitters and press on with your goals? Career Coach Chrissy Scivicque advises that “Change, of any sort, can make you feel like a fish out of water. It takes time to acclimate… Before you jump in with both feet, take some time to observe your new surroundings… Keep an open mind when exploring new environments.” Here are a few tips on how to cope with the pressure of being a beginner:
A. Be Honest About Your Shortcomings:
Nobody likes admitting weakness. Nobody wants to feel helpless. Unfortunately, denying vulnerable emotions when facing new challenges actually contributes to bad judgement. Instead of going out of your way to pretend you have all the answers, be humble. Be honest about what you know, or don’t know, and build on your experience from a starting-point of authenticity.
B. Be Curious:
The only way to adapt to new circumstances is to immerse yourself in them. Learn the rules and build a strategy to achieve success. If possible, find someone who can mentor you, or give constructive advice. But if there’s no one around to help, do plenty of research on your own so that you can learn the ropes. There’s a reason why they say knowledge is power.
C. Be Human:
People are often so obsessed with perfectionism that they don’t realize how much damage expectations can cause. If you ever find yourself positioned as a beginner, realize that you’re going to make mistakes. You’re going to experience slip ups and blunders. That’s OK. Instead of preparing yourself to succeed without ever making mistakes, prepare to recover from mistakes with speed.
Every individual has a secret weapon when it comes to adapting to change. Confidence. Instead of letting uncertainty drown out your talents, choose to believe in yourself. Choose to confront any challenges that come your way with faith, and focus. Take hope in the fact that you are a capable being. You have the wisdom to make good choices, and the discernment to solve problems. This is the attitude that should guide your thinking when pursuing new ambitions.
