4 Pitfalls that Put a Wet Blanket on Your Pushups

If you’ve ever spent more than one second trying to get fit in life, there’s a good chance you’ve done pushups at one point or another.  This is a good thing, considering how versatile pushups are as a workout. The benefits of daily pushups include improved muscle mass and cardiovascular health.” Pushups are relatively easy to do.  But even so, it’s easy to botch the efficacy of pushups with some innocent bad habits.  Here are a few common mistakes that typically ruin people’s pushups:

1.    Barely Dipping Low:

               The majority of people who do pushups have a common lazy habit.  They avoid letting their body weight dip lower because it takes more effort to rise back up.  While this practice makes doing pushups easier, it actually deprives people of the full benefits that come with doing pushups.  Always make sure to do the maximum rep by dipping low enough for your elbows to bend it a right angle.

2.    Getting too Fancy:

               Pushups come in all kinds of variations.  Making minimal adjustments to posture, leg positioning, and speed of repetitions can help target specific muscle groups while working out.  However, unless you’re some kind of a professional bodybuilder, there really isn’t any need to get complicated with pushups.  Use basic form with good posture and you should be fine either way.

3.    Drooping Your Head:

               One of the most instinctive things that people do when exercising with pushups is bowing their heads down to cope with the strain.  This reflex might feel natural in a moment, but it actually puts a lot of pressure on the spine.  The more such bowling is done, the bigger the chances a neck injury can happen.  Always keep your spine in proper alignment so that doing pushup doesn’t hurt you.

4.    Spread Palms:

               The easiest way to detect a novice at pushups is by paying attention to their palms.  People who spread their hands wide usually don’t understand that this posture puts too much pressure on the shoulders.  The best way to challenge the upper body through pushups is to keep your palms close together as you descend.  They don’t have to touch, but they shouldn’t be miles apart either.
