4 Practices that Can Radically Improve Your Reading-Skills

A wise person once said that “knowledge is the key to success.” But knowledge doesn’t exactly form out of thin air. Knowledge is an attribute specifically built from the habit of reading. Even though the majority of people are taught how to read in school, reading is unfortunately a lifelong challenge for many. They think of it as a chore.  Which is an attitude that directly interferes with the odds of success. Renowned Author Subodh Sharma advises that “One of the basic reasons why reading is important is that it helps you grow mentally, emotionally and psychologically. Every book gives you an opportunity to learn new things and explore new ideas. Reading books just makes you smarter.” Here are a few tips on how to become a proficient reader:

     I.        Follow Your Curiosity:

The main reason why people fall out of love with reading is because school forces it down our throats. But reading can become a thrill when the subject-matter is something you’re personally interested in. If there’s a topic which intrigues you, explore it with some light reading. Settle into the journey of discovering your interests.

    II.        Pace Yourself:

Some people read at the speed of light, while others take their time. There’s nothing right or wrong with either. But if you’re going to read something though, read it in a way that suits your individual reading-pace. Avoid using shortcuts like speed-reading if you need more time to digest information.

   III.        Make Understanding the Goal:

Academic traditions place a lot of importance on finishing work. Especially if that work involves learning. But the best way to benefit from reading is to actually comprehend the words on a page. This is why it’s better to prioritize retention as your read. Don’t just read in order to finish the page, read in order to get the point.

IV.        Take Notes if You Have To:

Reading isn’t just meant to plant ideas into people’s heads. It’s meant to stimulate sophisticated thought. And depending on whether you’re reading something complex, it may be necessary to juggle multiple concepts while reading. If you don’t want to get overwhelmed with contemplation, do some note-taking while you read. Writing notes helps to filter out and organize the underlying themes in literature.

The good news about reading is that it’s not a super-power. It’s not some extraordinary secret that’s only available to privileged elites. Anyone can develop their reading skills, and anyone can benefit from reading. All it takes is a little investment of energy. If you truly desire to increase your brainpower, start with the simple act of reading. Whether it’s a book, a newspaper, or a magazine, feed your imagination with literature. The more you read, the faster your intellect will gradually flourish.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
