5 Appealing Habits that Can Boost Your Likeability

Being likeable is like having a superpower.  When people like you, it just feels good.  Unfortunately, not everybody has a natural ability to be likeable.  In fact, many people find themselves struggling with conflicts or disagreements because of issues with likeability.  The bad news is that sometimes it’s difficult to be likeable.  The good news though, is that anybody can enhance their likeability with a little work and patience.

It’s All About Energy:

Author/Entrepreneur Scott Young suggests that “Likeability doesn’t sound sexy. It sounds rather bland… but if you put likeability in the right context, it’s a powerful tool. It makes relationships easier and it gives you more opportunities to connect. People help you because they genuinely want to help someone they like.” Here are a few tips on how to become more likeable:

1.    Be a Listener:

The majority of people have a natural tendency to be self-centered.  Being a good listener is a chance to show that you’re capable of compassion.  It makes you stand out from the average selfish person by demonstrating unselfishness.

2.    Use Affirmative Language:

Vocabulary has an invisible, but subliminal effect on people’s attitudes.  When people use negative language, it triggers negative emotions.  This is why you should go out of your way to always use positive language in your speech.

3.    Practice Mirroring:

Most people have a psychological attraction to those whom they have things in common with.  This is why mirroring is an effective way of breaking the ice.  Reflecting someone else’s appearance, mannerisms, or demeanor, encourages them to let down their guard around you.

4.    Be Polite:

The most basic way to establish connections with people is by showing respect and courtesy.  Saying please and thank you might not seem like it has an impact, but simple politeness is always appreciated.

5.    Use Compliments Generously:

There isn’t a person in existence who doesn’t like receiving compliments.  Showering people with praise automatically puts them in a good mood.  It encourages them to associate you with kindness.

Conclusion:

The key to tapping into likeability is emotional intelligence. Particularly by practicing empathy. Instead of prioritizing personal interests when interacting with others, go out of your way to understand where they’re coming from. The more you can demonstrate sympathy, or decency, the more you can jump over hurdles and create friendship.
