6 Things Parents Should Do in Order to Raise an Entrepreneur

When people hear the word entrepreneur, chances are they envision a seasoned professional running a small company. And that’s a fair assumption. But even though it’s true that most entrepreneurs tend to be college-age adults, it’s entirely possible for kids to learn this life-changing skill. All they need is the proper mentorship and guidance. Digital Marketing Strategist Samuel Edwards advises that “One of the biggest benefits of teaching your children about entrepreneurship is that you’re able to give them a stronger respect for money. Some children might believe you if you told them money grows on trees, but kids who are exposed to business operations know better.” Here are a few tips on how to teach kids about business and entrepreneurship:

     1. Talk Regularly About Business: Whether or not you own a company, talk to your kids every now and then about what it takes to pursue business as a career.  Give them information that will spark their curiosity, and make them interested in being entrepreneurs.

     2. Teach them How to Sell: Salesmanship is the very first skill that people should learn in order to be good entrepreneurs.  Kids can start by doing something small like selling food at a lemonade stand, or selling girl scout cookies.

     3. Encourage Good Sportsmanship: Every entrepreneur makes mistakes.  But only successful ones learn from them.  Teach kids how to be gracious when competing, and resilient in the face of frustrating circumstances.

     4. Reward Initiative: Entrepreneurs are free thinkers.  They’re the type of people who take the lead and make decisive choices.  Encourage such traits in your kids.

     5. Teach them How to Be Organized: Being an entrepreneur involves endless admin.  It requires discipline, punctuality and coordination.  The sooner kids understand how to be organized, the easier it is to transfer such skills towards entrepreneurship.

     6. Emphasize the Value of Problem-Solving: Entrepreneurs don’t just sell products to people.  They solve problems in the process.  This is why parents should raise kids to be solution-oriented. Show them how to solve riddles and puzzles.

Conclusion:

One of the most helpful things that parents can do for their kids is to teach them about business. Especially with respect to matters of financial literacy. The earlier kids develop entrepreneurial instincts, the easier it is for them to appreciate the responsibilities that come with adulthood. Practicing entrepreneurship at an early age gives kids a chance to gain a head start on their careers.
