3 Formative Stages That All Relationships Go Through When Building Trust

A lot of things go into making romance work, but arguably the most important ingredient is trust.  When trust is strong in a relationship, it becomes easier to share in one another’s lives.  Not only does trust help with basic connection, it also strengthens intimacy as time goes by.  Trust is the backbone of any close relationship.

Trust is the Foundation:

Psychiatrist Dr. Sadhvi Mythili explains that “Trust is the faith you have in someone that they will always remain loyal to you, and love you. To trust someone means that you can rely on them, and are comfortable confiding in them because you feel safe with them. It is the building block for any relationship. Without which the foundation will always remain shaky.” Here’s a quick explanation of how trust evolves in relationships:

STAGE #01 – Acquaintance:

This stage of trust creation happens during the early days of a relationship.  Even though partners are attracted to one another, they don’t really know enough about each other to let go of their defenses.  They gradually begin to exchange information in order to develop mutual understanding.

STAGE #02 – Testing:

As partners get to know one another, the time eventually comes to examine whether condemnation or betrayal are possible.  This is when the testing phase goes into full swing.  This involves exploration of qualities such as honesty, patience, loyalty and affection.  If a couple can make it through the testing phase, trust will solidify. And the relationship will transition into commitment.

STAGE #03 – Bonding:

The final stage of trust formation is an atmosphere of confidence.  Partners have learned enough about each other, and observed enough about each other, to understand that betrayal is not a first instinct.  In the bonding stage, partners have acclimated to one another’s love languages.  They know how to share love and kindness in a way that strengthens the relationship.

Conclusion:

While trust reinforces the bond that partners have with each other, trust is also fragile.  It takes a lot of work and faithfulness to make sure that trust is never broken.  No matter how many highs and lows a couple experiences together, the one thing they should always invest in, is preserving trust.  If you like what you just read from our blog, you’ll love the various informative courses, workshops and events listed on our websites and social media.
